Attend Mass in Florence
We will be in Florence on a Sunday in July and would like to attend a Mass. Any suggestions on what church to attend?

If you are looking for a Roman Catholic Mass in English, go to the cathedral's website at:
If you are looking for Anglican mass, you have two choices, the English church, St. Marks, at Via Maggio 18, and the American church, St James, at via B. Rucellai, 9. Both, of course, are Anglican. Both have websites.
There are, of course, a few other churches of note in Florence. If you are looking for mass in Italian (or sometimes in Latin), you might consider the Dominican church of Santa Maria Novella, or the Franciscan church of Santa Croce, or the Medici church of San Lorenzo, or Santa Trinita, or Ognissanti, or Santo Spirito, or SS Annuniziata, or SS Apostoli, or, or.
San Clemente...

As suggested by the local expert any of the churches which he lists. After visiting many of these churches, you might want to pick one which you especially enjoyed for attending mass. The mass schedules are posted at each church.
The 1030 mass at the Duomo includes Gregorian chanting which would begin at 10am so arrive early.
Enjoy!!

I know our minds should be on higher things but if you get there early enough, Mass at il Duomo enables you to sit around the high altar and stare up at Vasari's frescoes. And I know I shouldn't be saying this either but be warned the sermons are long here. Even the 6pm weekday Mass can include a 40 minute talk. Good for your Italian though. I'm personally not keen on Mass at Santo Spirito and not just because I don't appreciate the austere interior, but I do enjoy both weekday and Sunday Mass at S Annuziata. This is a very nice "local" parish church and far less touristy. It's also extremely beautiful. Weekday morning Mass at Santa Croce is usually said in the Bardi chapel with the amazing life of St Francis frescoes decorating the walls. The security people are not so strict here either so unlike il Duomo no one shoos you out if wander around afterwards.

Thank you for all the great recommendations. We will look into all. My husband grew up in the days of the Roman Catholic Mass in Latin...I grew up a WASP...a Latin Mass might be very interesting for both us and our kids.

The Gregorian chant is still sung by the monks of San Miniato al Monte, 4.30 p.m. in winter, 5.30 p.m. in summer
